Environmental movement refers to all efforts and initiatives that represent any form of activism towards the protection of environment. Environmental activists work for changes in public policy and individual behavior to ensure just and sustainable management of resources and stewardship of the environment. As defined by Wikipedia:
“The environmental movement (sometimes referred to as the
ecology movement), also including conservation and green politics, is a diverse
philosophical, social, and political movement for addressing environmental
issues.”
Environmental
Movement in Bangladesh
According to an article of The Daily Sun, environmental
movement commenced in Bangladesh in the 1908s. Poribesh Rokkha Shopoth (POROSH),
an organization that united the country’s environmental pioneers, was
established in 1990s. Non-resident Bangladeshis also came forward and formed
Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) in 1998.
To create a nationwide, united, and strong civic movement to
protect Bangladesh’s environment, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) was
launched in 2000.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers` Association (BELA), an
advocacy group in the field of environment, started its journey in 1993. Since
then, it has worked to ensure environmental justice by accelerating legal
reforms in the field of environmental jurisprudence, creating awareness about
environmental laws, activating responsible agencies in performing their legal
duties, and developing strategies to provide legal protection to people
affected by environmental degradation.
BELA has played a major role in getting the concept of Public
Interest Litigations (PILs) recognized by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Consequently, representative Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and individual
public-interested litigants can raise voice and take actions against
environmental violations.
